in the begining of the movie, there is this disclaimer that the movie is based on a true story. It is based (homaged or ripped off, depending on your stance on homages) from a movie by Bergman called VIRGIN SPRING. A basic horror audience wouldn't have known that. It isn't a true story, it is Wes Craven's story, based on the bergman movie.
There are a finite amount of plots for ANY movie made; 67 different plots. They have been reworked, recycled, copied, and borrowed from in various parts since movies have begun. This is not counting the movies that are direct copies or homages to classic or foreign movies. This is why there is so little new in movies. It has all been done over and over again. Even take a look at your favorite movie. You think this one is so original. But think about it for a moment. There are elements from a dozen other movies in this favorite of yours. A bit borrowed here, a bit borrowed there to make something new. If you consider this, is it really all that new. It is only reworked to make it shinier and seem like it is something never seen before.

No, it is fiction and the debut of writer/director/now known as a master of horror Wes Craven, but it was based on the film 1960 Oscar Wining Swedish film "Jungfrukällan".

It seemed so convincing as the many members of the cast and crew were genuinely scared through the entire making the film and one of them actually walked of the set.

When Wes Craven took it to the MPAA to get a rating back in 1972, it was originally rated "X".

that's as bad as texas chainsaw being a true story. which it's not really.

i mean there was a guy in wisconsin in the 50's who ate women. but it wasn't a whole family in texas with deranged inbred weirdos. and creepy tea drinking trailer people.
