I want to be able to view my pictures and video's and listen to my music from my PC through my Playstation 3. The Xbox 360 can do this through networking either as a media centre extender or through the dashboard.

Yep,

Just link it to your Ethernet! Run a network set up scan and your PC should come up as a possible candidate (if your computer is connected to the same Ethernet). After you have done this your computer should come up with a pop-up window saying that a remote device is being connected. Click to go through the messages making sure you are actually connecting what you think. . .

After you have connected both your PC and PS3 you can download software for your PS3 such as the latest updates....

Thanks,

You need to run network setup (you need to allow file share) on the pc after connecting the ps3 with the ethernet cable to the pc.
