Bollywood is the name the English language Press gave to the Bombay based Indian film industry - which, by the way, is the BIGGEST in the world, producing over 600 films a year.

It was initially a sort of 'snide' comment, because in the 50's and 60's the popular cinema had a great deal of Western influences, chicks smoking cigarettes in holders, A-line skirts, convertibles and even songs which were 'based' on popular American and British pop numbers.

The tag came to stick and now it's an accepted genre in Film studies courses. Bollywood cinema means loud dresses, loud acting, [melodrama], at least half a dozen songs and dances, a couple of fights and a happy ending usually one that has a wedding at the end.

Modern Hindi 'intellectual' cinema is known as 'Multiplex cinema' in India.

It's the Hindi movie industry in Mumbai, which was formally known as Bombay. Hollywood in Bombay is what Bollywood means. Their film industry has stricter rules than anything faced in American cinema including the 2 second kiss (no kissing in Bollywood). More people watch Bollywood movies than Hollywood movies. Style wise they are all the same. Characters come out of nowhere and start singing and dancing is probably the biggest cliche in the Bollywood industry.

B is for Bombay (the centre of Indian movies) and the rest is after Hollywood. Nigerian film indusrty is now called Nollywood. I don't know what some people here mean by copycats, it's an easy word to remember and you instantly know you're talking about movies.

They want to copy like Hollywood.. so they just change the first alphabet 'H' to 'B'.
