Does anyone know if it is painful or any disadvantages/advantages. I would have asked in homework help, but i thought I would get better answers here.

for women who have had children, then it's generally not painful. But for women who haven't had children, with smaller wombs, then it can be quite painful to insert and can cause cramping and heavier periods every month, with more pain. The womb is trying to expel this foreign object, so will cramp up.
I don't have children, and had a coil inserted some years ago. It was painful to insert as it entered the womb (I still wince when I think about it) and every month I had very heavy and painful periods - so much so that after five months I just couldn't put up with this monthly inconvenience and had it removed. For contraceptive purposes it seems to work well - I didn't get pregnant - but I think there's other good methods of contraception. Also, the coil doesn't protect you from sexually transmitted diseases so for that reason you should always use a condom with a new partner.
Hope this answer helps. Good luck with your homework.

The coil can be difficult to insert from what I've heard other women who have tried it have said. There are side effects to it like with other birth control options such as having spotting (a bit of bleeding).

i had one years ago, the advantage was no hormones, no pills to remember to take, the downside, painful periods, pelvic pain a lot of the time, and no protection against std's for those that need it, but about 98 % safe against pregnancy
