1600 hits and a dismal .266 batting average. I'm sorry but this guy was a mediocre baseball player who struck out like crazy. All he did was hit a bunch of solo homers and was a lousy defensive player. He's the most the overrated player of all time!!!

He may still get in the Hall of Fame, but I'm glad that he wasn't included in this year's class. Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripkin should be the only ones to be inducted this year.

McGwire HRs
solo: 271
men on base: 247

Now, most homers are hit with the bases empty -- it's an empirical function of the game -- but McGwire was hardly slouching when there were teammates on the bases. (This accounts for "only" 518 of his 583 HRs, but the equivalence of the split is clear. It's what Retrosheet has available.)

Note also his career .394 OBP, currently 78th best all-time. Mac was an on-base monster in addition to being a slugging machine. That's a rare and valuable combination which teams have a demonstrated interest in paying lots of munny to obtain.

Anyway... it's not McGwire's statistical record or playing performance that is inhibiting his Hall candidacy, and it is foolish to claim so. It's the cloud of steroid allegations hanging over him, we all know this is why his Hall chances are weakened, and there's really no valid reason to try dismissing him based upon his stats other than petty vindictiveness -- which, I grant, has been a historically popular motivation throughout all walks of recorded history, but baseball debate should aspire to a higher standard.

Ask him. You won't get a declaration for him being in the hall even from him.
