Essentially, they are very very small. Not always unicellular. Other than being really very small, there are a huge diversity of microbes which exist in almost any niche in the planet!

The major groups are: bacteria, fungi, archaea and protista

Viruses, plasmids and prions are considered non-living and are not considered microbes even though they are very small.
