Animals have many ways of communicating with one another, and with us. Think about how many times you have known what a pet wants, because of its body language or particular sound it makes.

Some animals do make sounds that are not audible to human ears. Elephants for example produce a low-vibration rumbling sound, undectable to the human ear, that can be heard by other elephants up to at least twelve miles away.

A few other facts about animal sounds:

The Baluga Whale communicates with a series of very high-pitched squeaks, much unlike the more commonly known "songs" of whales.

Cougars scream, sounding so much like a woman screaming that people often mistake them for just that. (I've had this experience myself while living out in the country... called my neighbor to see if she was ok... lol)

The loudest sound made by an animal is the whistle of the Blue Whale.

The Mongolian tapir, by using its anal sphincter muscle, can create high-pitched tones that can be heard by dogs 30 miles away.

I've read that the sound made when a duck passes gas is the precise acoustic opposite of its quack; if it does both simultaneously, there's no audible sound.

The rhesus monkey is the only animal (that I know of) that can be taught to hum a tune.

There is a great book on the subject of animal communication. Although the title implies it is about elephants only, it is about animals of all kinds.

"When Elephants Weep"
by Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson and Susan McCarthy

It's available on Amazon.com, and probably in most bookstores.

I highly recommend it.

Ok, I'll shut up now. (Animals, their emotions, and our connections with them are one of my biggest passions.)

Yes of course they talk, and we can hear them! They have vocal language and they have other means of communication like body language.

Just because animals don't sound like we do, don't assume they can't talk to each other.

As for Charlotte's Web - that would be fiction. Personally I think it's silly to put human voices on animals, and quite rude actually. As if they can't communicate well just because they don't use human speech.

Yes, of course.
For example There are many experiments done on elephants. They send some voices on a very high pitch which human ears cannot catch. Scientists caught these voices and played back and elephants responded on that.

2nd example: You can hear chirping of birds, do you think they are just making noises. Many Bird keeps understand their voices and can tell what the bird said. BTW in jungle birds make noises to warn other animals/ birds for danger.

i think Language is nothing bu few sounds that we make and we know that this sound related to this meaning. Animals might not be as rich in sounds as we are but they definitely use sounds to communicate/ talk

They do communicate in ways that we can not hear. My dogs signal to each other, and even call each other from the other room, if they want them to come ..Many dogs and cats, and horses have telepathic communication skills.
I read a book by a Doctor in England who studied telepathic communications between these animals. If I can find that book, I will post it here>

Very interesting -- yes I do think they communicate in their own ways. Sometimes they have a difficult time in domestication (exotics in particular) without their colony much like we need other humans to thrives.

There is one case of an elephant who died of lonliness not long after being separated from it's mate. So, I guess they were really in luv!!

They may have some understanding of various inflections of their sounds, but mostly it's body language that they rely on to communicate.
