why can you see alot of stars in the mountains or the desert as opposed to not seeing as many in the city?

The reflection of the lights coming off of the city bounce off and refract back into the night sky making it hard to see the stars. In the moutains, where the light is not so prevelent, the stars are more bright and are more visible to the naked eye.

Now, to answer your question, you can see more stars in the night sky in the country because there are no lights at ground level (street lamps, car lights, house lights, etc.) as there are in the city.
