Why did the Victorians like detective stories?

I have been asked to answer questions about the time when Sir Conan Doyle lived. This may seem a silly question, but it needs answering and I can't find anything. Please help me.

.It was new and it was printed as a series in the paper. People followed it like a popular soap these days. People would discuss the stories at work and in the streets.

When Conan Doyle 'killed' Holmes there were even questions asked in Parliament.

At the top of my head, I could be wrong, perhaps it was spurred by Jack The Ripper unsolved mysteries?
