i am planning a trip to tokyo, and i will be 18 when we go. its going to be me and a friend, no parents, which brings me to my problem. 18 is when im considered an adult in america of course, but in japan i'm not considered an adult until i'm 20 (i'm pretty sure of that). will i have problems in japan since i'm not going there with anybody over 20?

it will only be a problem if you want to smoke or drink alcohol (though its not really enforced) because the legal age is 20 in japan. everything else will be fine. given that japan is such a safe country, its really common to see school kids out on their own, even elementary school kids. hotels and restaurants will be fine - they will ask your age but it won't be a problem.

Not an issue. Twenty really only counts for smoking, drinking and voting. Nobody seems to care if 18 year olds smoke or drink, and you won't be voting in any case. I'm from Canada where liquor laws are strictly enforced, so it's a bit of culture shock for me to see high school kids in nightclubs.

No, you won't.
The "adult" age is only really used for drinking age, and nothing else really requires age. Hotels will accept you, especially since you are a foreigner. You won't have any difficulties at all.
