I am looking to replace my outdated ATI Radeon 9600 AGP card with 128mb, with something faster and better.

Here's my setup:
Asus A7V8X-X motherboard
AMD Athlon XP 2800 (2.4GHz)
1 GB RAM/ Windows XP Home SP2
160 GB Hard Drive

And while I am open to trying Nvidia graphics cards, I'd prefer to stick with ATI if at all possible. Since I can't afford at this time to upgrade to the latest motherboard just to get PCI-E, I want to know which is the best AGP graphics card for games. Overall great performer. I don't want to go over $200, though. Thanks!

Try the ATI X1650 Pro AGP. It's priced at around $150. The very fast X1950 Pro AGP goes for $230 - 250. Nvidia has the fastest, the 7950GT AGP. It goes for $255-290.

Christopher's answer is sweet. My in straightforward terms addition is that a GeForce 9500 GT could be an extremely minor progression and not nicely well worth the price. the two stick including your present video card, or get something significantly greater proper. nVidia and ATI are bitter opponents, so their taking part in cards do no longer play particularly great with one yet another. no longer in straightforward terms are you able to no longer use one to spice up the overall performance of the different, however the drivers from the two companies frequently conflict with one yet another. The numbering schemes used via ATI and nVidia are enormously distinctive. A nVidia GeForce 9600 GT is a reasonably first rate gaming video card. An ATI Radeon 9600 is an extremely old, very vulnerable card card via at present's standards that makes use of the old AGP slot. It does not much greater healthful into your equipment.
