I mean, look at rap. It takes very little talent, and it's popular. I'm not saying it sucks, but it's not that hard. And mainstream rock. Anyone can sing, and play chords on the guitar. But METAL is where all the real talent is. The guitar riffs are complicated, even to the point where some people don't even consider it music anymore. I mean, look at George Fisher from Cannibal Corpse. You don't see talent like that every day. If you say he has no talent, go sing Severed Head Stoning, then tell me he's talentless. Another talented vocalist is Johnny Davy from Job For A Cowboy. And you don't see a bass player like Alex Webster (Cannibal Corpse) very often. He can fingerpick at extremely fast speeds. Or a guitar player like Ralph Santolla (Deicide). His solos are simply amazing. You can condemn metal all you want. It'll just show how closed-minded you are. And no, open-minded doesn't mean liking crap. It means being accept things.

And there are also many talented metal bands out there that I most likely missed. So just name the band, and I'll look them up.

I agree with you that alot of music that is mainstream doesn't involve all that much talent. Americans like catchy phrases, not how hard it is to play the song.

However, I do have to point out that metal is not the only genre of music that it takes talent to play/perform/create. I like alot of metal as well, I mean, look at Dimmu Borgir. The vocals are astounding, as is the music. But, as I said, there are other types of music that include talent, such as classical guitar. The fingerpicking you were describing before was developed for classical guitar. If you've ever heard Mozart played on an acoustic guitar, you'll understand. Especially if there were several players doing all of the parts. It's absolutely amazing.

Also, there are some mainstream artists that I respect. Such as Norah Jones. Her vocals are amazing. And alot of lyricists in the mainstream are very powerful, as well.

Maybe you should think about expanding your horizons and take in some different genres that you don't necessarily listen to on a regular basis. You might be surprised at what you will find.

It's because rap is simple, fast-forward and easy to understand. It isn't an untalented genre, it just doesn't embrace the use of something other than words, beat and rythmn. Sometimes simplicity is the one thing that makes people stand up and take notice. But talent works too. If you're looking for talent, that is.
