because they are ignorant and uneducated and refuse to help themselves i becoming so BEFORE they buy a pet.

fleas and worms bring disease, infection and can KILL your dog.
Human food can kill your dog and/or give him nutrition problems.

ALL these things are called neglect and abuse, and yes, you have a legal responsibilty to provide for your animals needs.

because they are uneducated...have you noticed that they are usually first time owners who either didn't have pets growing up or they weren't involved in their pets' care when they were young...and have you noticed that the people who usually help them the most have either been animal caregivers for many years, are trained professionals or who have learned from bad experiences? I agree it is abuse and they need to be re-educated, some even need to have their pets taken away regardless of whether or not they are adults they still don't know any better because no one taught them any better, and regardless of whether or not they know any better it is still abuse and they still need to be re-educated....I wish animal shelters and pet stores would better educate people before allowing them to buy or adopt a pet---prevention would be a better less painful way all around, but you know as well as I do that a pet store would never tell you how much hard work it is to raise a pup, they want to make money!! I figure if they care enough now to ask for help then now is the time to educate them, we may be too late for this dog but you can bet the next pet they have will stand a better chance for survival

It is a lack of education on some parts.

Some people go into buying a dog and they haven't researched the breed to find the one appropriate for them.

Some parts its just concerned pet parents looking for a quick answer to their questions... not because they haven't educated themselves, but because they are looking at every avenue possible.

As for feeding people food- it is not harmful to the dog... if you follow special recipes. Especially with all of the food recall.

Dogs who are vomiting or have diarreha are often prescribed human food from the vet. (Cooked white rice with boiled skinless chicken for example.)

But you have to be careful what you feed them as most dogs are prone to obesity.

And as for not training them or taking them to a vet unless seriously ill...

when they are seriously ill, in many cases its too late. And in a lot of cases, its hard to pinpoint a pet's illness if you don't know its health history.

A vet who has a long term history with a pet has an easier time with treating a seriously ill patient if it comes to that.

Heartworms, fleas and ticks, bloat, these things can be avoided easier with yearly preventative checkups with your doctor.

While your pet may not show outward signs of illness until it is too sick to help- they can show signs of bacteria or parasites in their fecal which is why a fecal float is recommended yearly. Catching it early enough will prevent the dog from havnig to go through undo illness.

And depending on where you live- giving rabies vaccinations is a law- and you can not self vaccinate. It must be done by a certified veterinarian.

Training your pet also prevents things from happening such as running out and getting hit by a car, injuring himself when he is at the vet. Proper training can help reduce the severity of their "freak out". It protects other people and their pets from attacks, and the dog from being attacked.

Why people think its ok to not go to the vet, and not train their pets is beyond me.

I can't tell you how many pets I've had to help Euthanise at the emergency vet clinic due to dogs running into traffic, dogs becoming seriously ill and not being seen till its too late, and so on.

as for letting them eat chocolate- chocolate can be toxic in dogs... deadly even. Depriving them of certian things is a loving act and for their own good.

While the effects may not be evident right away- in time it will take a toll.

not to mention- the I don't deprive my pet of things- At the clinic we had a 45 pound domestic short hair cat whose owner lived by that rule.

How healthy do you think that cat was? It couldn't walk more than a foot without becoming winded, it had heart problems. It was only 4 years old and ended up being put down. Is not depriving them of certian things worth them dying before their life expectancy?

I volunteer with an animal rights organization. It is frightening to realize just how poorly animals are treated. Did you see the query for help for a poor cat? His owner said his fur was coming off his face when he pulled on it. So to help his cat he poured alcohol on the sore. If we can't take care of our animals, how do we take care of the world? Hello anyone home???

They often do not know any better. That is why it is important to give them good, useful information if you care about their animals.

Also, many of the people on this site may be children. There is no way to know who the person writing the question is, whether male or female, Christian or atheist, straight or gay, animal lover or sadist.

Some people make up controversial questions just to get a lot of answers or to get a rise out of people.

I think it's mostly because people want to avoid paying vet bills. I think if you don't want to pay to keep your animals healthy (including getting them spayed and neutered) You shouldn't have a pet. It's like having kids. You should think about being able to afford them before you have them.

I do not consider any of that to be abuse except for the vet part. My dogs have never been "formally trained," deflead, and they love human food! My dog is over 15 and is the best dog I could ever imagine. He hates the vet and gets injured when he goes...so i don't take him unless it life threatening. I treat him well...so its not abuse. Oh and if you still don't like what Ive written...he eats chocolate all the time. Dogs lives are too short to deprive them of EVERYTHING. I let my dogs live the real life....they get to run free on acreage and live a great and happy life with an owner who loves and cares for them unconditionally!!!
