Believe it or not, poodles used to be very good hunting dogs. They would retrieve the ducks from the water -- and the water was often very cold. If you look closely at a poodle clip, you will see that the tufts of hair cover mostly their JOINTS. This was done to keep the joints from becoming cold and stiff.

Even though poodles are mostly house pets now, the 'traditional' clip is still used for shows. You don't see that many 'regular' poodles with that silly looking clip, just mostly in shows.
