Having done many rescues over the years many times because the wrong horse was bought due to the I fell in love with him or her and thought I could make it work pitfall I must say First and foremost find a horse knowledgeable unbiased friend or trainer that can go with you to meet potential horses. There are all together too many horses that are bought based on looks or someone that "fell" in love with the wrong horse and bought them any. This friend will need to be able to "pick apart" any potential horse and make sure you know the not so good points about the horse without the I just LOVE him/her aspect. Then start seeking a horse that fits what you are wanting in a horse DO NOT be breed biased there are exceptions to EVERY breed. as a general rule quarter horses are laid back but I have known a few that were pretty fiery arabs have a rep for being airheaded and flighty but again I have known some outstanding arabs as well it is a per horse bases You need to find the horse that fits and TEMPERMENT is your first concern then conformation then the rest (color, sex, age, breed etc) There are many GREAT outstanding kid safe all around family horses out there in every breed just takes patience to find the right one for you family.
Best of luck to you.

Don't buy by breed, buy the best horse you can find, no matter WHAT breed it is. Most people would tell you that Arabians are too spirited for young kids but my Arabian was FANTASTIC with children.
Don't fall in love with a horse that isn't right for you. Don't buy a pony, your kids will soon outgrow it and everyone will be heartbroken. And whatever you do, DO NOT buy a young horse, thinking that the horse and kids will grow up together. This is one of the most idiotic things people do and it's COMMON!! It always ends in disaster, unless the parent's are qualified horse trainers.
There are people you can hire who can help you buy the RIGHT horse. It's astonishing how many people buy the wrong horse but they can't sell it because they "love him!" so they end up with a horse they are afraid of. I'd bet more than half of the horses at boarding stables are owned by people who are scared of them.
It's a huge decision, get professional help if you aren't sure you can do it yourself!
Good luck and HAVE FUN!

If you want a riding horse, go with the American quarter horse. They are really sweet and love to be ridden on trails. They're good show horses and do well on the lunge and in the halter. Also, if you shine their coat, they look beautiful. Just make sure you have the right money for keeping a horse. That's the ultimate thing. If you want a miniature horse, go with the Falabella. They are about the size of a dog, and have the same traits as any horse. Kids mostly ride ponies because they are too short for anything else, but if you want a family horse, go with the American Quarter. I hope this helped!
Look forward to getting a horse. They are a real gift! =)

Check out that site.
First choose what you want the horse for... then select the temperment you'd prefer, then height and color and it will give you a list of all the breeds that fit your lifestyle.
You can play around with it a bit too- check out the trail riding horses, then go back and check out driving horses, so on.
Once you find one that looks like it may fit you... look up info on that breed and see if it is right.
Hope that helps.

Well, for a kid, it's going to have to have a pretty small penis. I'd recommend a pony, although depending on the kid's age, that might be a stretch too. My twelve year old cousin took in a whole pony her first time(what a night!).
