From 1997-2007? BESIDES 9/11? Hmmmm.... The Iraq War probably. Historians will probably crucify Bush for that one. Bush's 2000 election was historic in that it was only the 4th time someone lost the popular vote but won the electoral. And he was re-elected, none of the other 3 did that.

Also Hurricane Katrina. The last American city to be so devastated by a hurricane was Galveston in 1900.

The peaceful governmental transference of Hong Kong from the UK to China.

(I could also go into the whole of the collapse of the tiger economy in Asia, which ricocheted around the world, and changed the economic atmosphere...but I won't :)
