Whether the device will need to be ejected before removal depends entirely on what it is. Usually, the only things that need to be ejected are devices that have storage capacity. You can simply unplug your mouse or keyboard at any time. For an external drive, a USB flash drive, or a portable media player, there should be an icon in the system tray (lower right of your screen), probably with a little green arrow over a little grey box. Hover your mouse over it and you should get a little pop-up description like "Safely Remove Hardware". If you don't see this icon, the taskbar might be minimized to free up space on the taskbar. If the left edge of the system tray shows a double-arrow symbol that looks something like standard Rewind symbol, click that and see if the correct icon displays in the expanded system tray. If you still don't see a disconnect icon, but you know your device includes some sort of electronic storage capacity, about the only other thing that I could suggest is to power down the computer, either by turning it off or putting it into Hibernate mode. If it's a USB flash drive and there's an LED on it, don't remove it until the LED is turned off or you could damage the drive.
