Antietam was the first major battle on northern soil. A Confederate victory would bolster the morale in the south while causing the north to lose popular support. A southern victory would also establish legitamacy, which would open the door to European support. A Union loss would also leave Washington D.C. at risk.

It was the first real attempt on the part of the Comfederacy to go north to engage the Army of the Potomac and if they defeated them they could go further north and try to sue for a truce or to Washington DC.the mportance can also be stated in its aftermath for it gave Lincoln a glimmer of hope he was looking for and decided to push through a political masterpiece and morale booster ,the Emancipation Proclamation. One more aspect would be the South was needing and looking for legitimacy from the rest of the world and be recognized as an independent nation.had to show the rest of the world that they were legitimate. By getting recognition the South could rid themselves of an infamous blockade and would be able to keep their way of life.

"More Americans died in battle on Sept. 17th, 1862, than on any day before or since. General George B. McClellan had Lee's entire plan of battle, twice as many soldiers, and a shorter supply line yet due his timidity he barely managed a draw. With the exception of Gettysburg, it remains the bloodiest day in American history."
