it could be several things ... a likely situation is some codec pack or virus or corrupt file nuked ur windows native codecs ... u could try installing ffdshow or some other audio codecs .. maybe try microsoft and download their codec packages ... then maybe try a windows repair with ur operating system disk ...

then the cable from the cd/dvd is not connected to your motherboard check it out,,
or your sound card is not setup right,, look at these two problems first

what sound card are you using?
If it's a realtek then there is a known issue right now with microsoft updates that makes a conflict with rthdcpl.exe...download the update from microsoft
