I am buying a new Dell laptop, but am confused as to what size processor to get. I know I can upgrade memory and that stuff later (going with 1gb for now), but want to get the best processor now. It will definitely be a dual core processor and running Vista. So should I get the processor with 1gb cache or 2gb?

I've heard all of kinds of differing opinions on memory and Vista...any help is appreciated from this non-techy.

Take a look at my ID. It says Ms Dell... Anything I say about Dell is genuine. Click on my avatar to learn more about me.

If you are planning on using Vista, I highly recommend 2GB of RAM instead of 1GB.... Vista requires 1GB to run "OK" but highly recommend 2GB to " Run at its best"

I would personally select Intel Core2 Duo T5600 (1.83GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 667MHz FSB)

Depends on what model of Notebook you are considering to buy. Will it be an Insprion or an XPS?

UPDATE:

Ok. Go with the Insprion. And since you won't be doing anything heavy, you can safely go for the 1MB .

But I still recommend the CPU I provided you, because CPU is the hardest thing to be upgraded on a Notebook. So it is a wise idea to get the BEST CPU your money can buy.

You have a wonderful day now. Happy computing.

Note: Remember to tell Dell not to install any commercial software on your computer.

Get a good core 2 duo processor which has 4 MB cache. Also get atleast 1 GB RAM & a good graphic card.

on the cache, price wise, stick to 2gb right now. 4gb is just not worth the value yet. Prices recently dropped on Intels, so the 2gb Core 2 duos are in a "sweet spot".

If you are just a casual user and do not run simultaneous applications, consider the fastest single core (Yonah), 2x1Gb RAM and ATI or Nvidia graphics. You will be surprised at what it could do.
