My husband and I are ready to move out of upstate New York in the next year and have narrowed our options to 2 places: roswell, GA and Albuquerque, NM. We are looking for a small town atmosphere that is near a bigger city. We are hoping to find: mild climate, outdoor activities, dog friendly community, pretty scenery, good cost of living, and jobs for both of us in the medical field. Any thoughts? P.S.-do we have to worry about venomous snakes and spiders in these locations?

I don't live in Albuquerque, NM nor been there but I've heard some bad things about it. I'm talking about gang war stuff. It's too close to the border.
* Black race population percentage significantly below state average.
* Hispanic race population percentage significantly above state average.
* Foreign-born population percentage significantly above state average.
* Length of stay since moving in below state average.
* House age below state average.
I don't mean to be mean or anything but I would look at what city-data.com has to say. According to that the average house income is low.. and people don't stay long after they move to Albuquerque, two bad signs

Georgia. Atlanta is beautiful. Only spiders you have to worry about are brown recluse and black widowes lol.
Stays warm all the time, maybe 2 or 3 months outta the year cold, compared to NY :)
I live 2 hours away from atlanta in SC. Beautiful country.

sorry, but Albuquerque is no longer a small town. the population is nearing 1 million. the city recently passed a nun to friendly pet law and good jobs are disappearing. we are in a desert, water restrictions for the summer started april 1. we have rattlesnakes and lots of black widows. i've lived in albuquerque since 1973 (when it really was a small, pleasent town)

Don't know about New Mexico, but Roswell is nice, and has all the criteria you listed. Just don't come down here and start telling us how you did things up North and you will be fine. ;)

New Mexico does NOT have a mild climate. Georgia would be your best bet. I hear it's lovely.

New Mexico, its quiet in most places and the critters won't get you if you keep your eyes peeled.
