The definition of space is actually a large open area, but for our purposes, we'll call it anything beyond the atmosphere of Earth. However, as we continue to explore and learn about our universe, we must change the definition to say beyond the atmosphere of any planet.

First of all space is not nothingness. Space is not just the absence of everything. Space is part of the fabric of the universe. Einstein taught us that space and time (space-time) can be distorted or warped by the presence of matter and/or energy and this distortion results in gravity.
