I have a 6 inch long adult Calico Fantail fish. He's about two years old. He just got this 'thing' on his sides....it looks red and has like a white film on top, and a small white clump at the base of his tale. I know it's not 'ick' cause there are no white spots on him. What could it be? Is it just cause he's getting old? How long does this breed live and can I treat him?

No change in his 'character', I mean he's still happy and swimming around. Any info would help. Thank you.

Secondary infection in an ammonia burn wound. He could live to be 25 years old. Yes you can treat him, but first get the water clean. By the way,Goldfish don't have 'character'.

It sounds like either an out break of fungus or protozoan parasites. I would suggest you treat with malachite green or copper which will kill either. Malachite green and copper are an active ingredient in better ich medications and fungus control products, so just use one of those at the recommended dose.

EDIT: After seeing the photo you added I would bet on a protozoan infestation. The above treatment should would or you could opt for something like Maracide or Clout.

It may be a fungus, you should separate him form the rest and clean the tank then take the fish to pet land discount or pet-co and see if they have any books on the subject if you don't want to transport him take some really good pictures of him and use them to show the clerks at stores i mentioned.
