I was reading something about the Alabama sex ed class and most counties down there actually teach students that being gay is illegal and punishable.

Many down here in the South....they're just not enforced too often (they're sometimes included in a list of charges when two men are caught "in the act" in public places in order to stiffen the penalties for their indiscretion).

The US Supreme court recently issued a ruling that declares any such laws unconstitutional. Therefor, the answer to your question is NO. While not all such laws have been struck from the books yet, their enforcement would be a violation of civil rights and considered illegal.

True, Lawrence v. Texas made it illegal to prosecute homosexual acts (with the visionary Scalia, Thomas and Rehnquist dissenting). But it's still legal in abou two-thirds of the states to discriminate against gays in housing, job, public accomodations. so where the questions is 'is it illegal to be gay in any city or state,' i would argue that it is to some degree.
(btw Father, with due respect to your extensive knowledge of human sexuality, being gay is NOT a LIFESTYLE anymore than being tall or having ears that stick out is a lifestyle!!)

Many states have laws on the books that can not be enforced. many states have sodomy laws on the books, so yes it is still illegal in some states ( although as noted it cannot be enforced)

Also note that life style is still not protected by the US constitition, some cities have listed sexual oreintation as a protected class but in general it still is not.

No, plain and simple. It is a violation of civil rights to have such laws.

Yes, some cities have old laws against sodomy, but gays ignore those laws.
