If you honestly believe that they did a great job, you should simply tell them so. Communicating to an actor that you enjoyed his or her performance isn't difficult; just be honest. The tricky thing is knowing what to say to an actor whose work you DIDN'T care for all that much, especially if the play was weak all the way around. In cases such as this, I generally leave it at "nice work," which is something you can almost always say with sincerity. Even when a play stinks, you can still acknowledge the sheer amount of work that was required to rehearse and perform it.

I'm assuming that the show has already happened. (if not flowers are always a great way to tell a performer... any performer, that you enjoyed their performance.)
If the show is done and over and some time has passed usually a verbal "you did a really good job in ______" or "I really liked the way you_____ in the play." any variation on how you felt would be entirely cool.

DID THEY? It's not the size of the role, but what you bring to it. if they were indeed great, let them know that you think this is a recognition for bigger and better parts.
