Whenever I actually get a call from a recruiter they ask me questions about things that I went over in my coverletter (such as willing to relocate and why I am looking for a job). Is it even worth it to go through the extra effort with them?

The cover letter matters to the hiring manager. Recruiters only weed out the "maybes" from the "no ways". IT MATTERS since your objective is to get an interview with the hiring manager.

Are your cover letters too windy. Keep them short and sweet. your resume is the place for details, and thinks like, relocation, why you're looking for a job are things for the interview.

Here's a link, but I suggest you go to a bookstore and plunk down some money and buy a book on resumes and cover letters. Go to Barnes & Noble, etc. and to the business section.
It'll set you back about $ 25.00, but if it gets you the job you want, won't it be worth it?
Goodluck.

My experience is that most recruiters use automated computer systems to scan your cover letter and resume for certain keywords that fit the job they are trying to fill. Depending on the job, they may receive thousands of resumes so they try and screen out as many as possible. I would reccommend always submitting a cover letter.

Yes, they do. I've been on that side of the table and your cover letter had better be on target and spotless.

People who say you don't need a cover letter are either stuck in crummy jobs or clueless.

No, they don't read them. Usually they get a ton of resumes, so the use ley word searches from both your resume and cover lettr to determine if you are a match.
