It depends on two things.
If you need a visa to visit the U.S., then you probably need a visa to visit Canada as well, which would have to be applied for previous to your visit. However, you could always stop at the border and inquire, they just might let you.

A word of caution, though. Unless you have a multi-entry visa for the U.S., you may not be allowed back into the U.S., because as soon as you step into Canada you have left the U.S. and on a single-entry visa, might not be allowed back in.

Please check on possibilities before trying this, just to be safe.

If you mean passport than yes. By plane you'll need a paasport. You can drive across the border with out one until Jan./2008.
