Greece as far as geography is concerned is a bit on the extreme side. Mostly high mountains and around 6000 islands. The area was formed after a series of major geological events. The mainland is full of drives through, up, around, over mountains with gorges and forbidding cliffs and tops peppered with antiquities such as Delphi, Epidaurus, Dodoni, Mycenae, Akrotiri, etc (endless list). Greek waters have thousands of islands each with it's own architecture and natural beauty. Depending on time available to you you could island hop from Athens or Salonika to Crete or Rhodes.
If I may, some advice. I'm an avid traveler and have been so for 30 years. I have found that taking a cruise or an organized tour right at the beginning, gives me a good idea about what I would really like to do. Especially on my first visit to a new country.

I think you should travel around the Ionian islands if you want beautiful scenery.

Much maligned though it is, Corfu has some beautifil spots if you can be bothered to look for them.

Next island down, Paxos, has a beatiful Venetian inspired harbour front and gorgoeus pine-scented woods inland, and its little neighbour, Antipaxos, is fabulous if you can visit when the hordes of tourists are not around.

A little further away is Ithaca, which has stunning scenery and Kefalonia, which is also very pretty.

You'll find beauty in Greece almosy anywhere you go. Enjoy !

Greece is beautiful anywhere you decide to go. In the summer, the islands are the best choice. Paros-Santorini, Syros-Andros, or Sifnos-Milos are good choices, you can combine them as pairs are on the same ferry line.
But if you want more magnificent nature scenery, you must go to the Meteora, huge rocks on top of which have been founded old monasteries. Not too far is mount Pelion, also a magnificent place that combines mountain and sea and also very picturesque villages with old houses.
whatever you do, you'll pass form Athens I guess, so don't forget to allow 2-3 days to visit the monuments, museums and sites. They are unique.
PS. Aegina is nice for a day trip from Athens, but not in order to plan your holiday around it.
You will also enjoy a day trip form athens to Delphi and Hosios Lukas monastery.

The whole of Greece is spare but scenic, of course. To see coastlines especially at sunset, the western side is preferable; but the great scenic vistas of Greece are all found north of the Peloponnesus, near Delphi, Mt. Olympus an north of there, in the monastery regions and the wilder west,.
You can't miss.

I propose Rhodos island... magnificent beaches, forests, monuments of all the centuries, the most beautiful and pittoresque medieval town in the Mediterranean (the city of the Knights with the Palace of the Great Magister and hundrends of sovereign houses), the unique Lindos with its beautiful buildings and its medieval castle on top, entairtainment of all kinds... And the option for daily cruises to the nearby islands like Symi, Halki etc...

I think Crete is incredibly beautiful. I have traveled there a few times and there is always something new to see. It's also less touristed than some of the other islands like Santorini. It's a great island for the explorer/adventurer...

I agree, EVERYWHERE! I've been to Aegina, and it's great. I also recomend the island of Hydra. You can visit both in one day, but you would have to take a boat or day-cruise.

I go to a resort in the first of the three peninsulas in the northern Aegean. It's in Halkidiki, in Kassandra. It's called The Kassandra Palace, and it's the best hotel I've ever been to, and I travel A LOT.

Aegina... its one of the Greek Islands, its small and cute little place. (my favorite place in the world) Greece in general has the best tasting food, the nicest people and affordable everything! (I went during fall break while on study abroad in London)
