Ok, so I have dirty , large nails. I want to clean them up and make them look pretty. Anyone have any recemendments?

Probably the best way, at least to start, is to get a professional manicure. Ask the manicurist what she's doing and why as she does each treatment, ask her for advice on how to keep them nice.
If the nails are dirty around the nail bed or cuticle, that could just need some real scrubbing with good soap and a nail brush to get into the corners.
If the nails themselves are dirty, you may need to find out why - is it because of a vitamin deficiency you should take care of, because of staining from food or other things (blueberries are bad for that, so is hair dye and some household cleaners).
If they're just a little dull, get one of those nail buffer pads - use the roughest side to smooth the nail and sort of sand off the top dirty layer, then the next roughest side to smooth it even more and the smoothest side of the board to really give them a natural shine.
Massage cuticle oil or nail oil into the nails each night and they will start to grow in nicely.

If you mean that the nail itself is discolored, get an inexpensive manicure kit that you can use at home. Then get a little dish and soak your nails in lemon juice. After that, use a rough cloth to rub them dry. This will help fade the discoloration and remove any surface dirt. Then, push your cuticles back a little, if it needs done. Trim and file your nails. Then rub a little clear oil like from the lemon rind, into your nails. This will make them strong and healthy. When they are dry, use a base coat and paint them a neutral color for everyday, then put a top coat over to protect the color. Make sure that each layer of polish is completely dry before you put the next one on. If you don't use the base coat, the polish will discolor your nails and defeat the purpose of using lemon juice to remove discoloration.
Now, if you are like me and work with chemicals and water all the time, clean them daily, use the oil and put on really nice fake ones or get acrylic ones done for special occaisions. If your nails are in chemicals or water all the time, they will not look good no matter what you do.

Well it's a great motivator to see your nails at their very best, so splurge $15-$20 (even less if you go to a beauty school) and get them done. And then they'll be easier to maintain from there.
And btw, not to be a beyatch, but it's recommendations, not recemendments.

first ??? are you a long time smoker???? if so this is why your nails look "dirty" smoking discolors your nails....if that's not the case and they are just dark then you may want to go to a nail salon and get a manicure--just let them know that you want to start to lightening your nails up without polish...there is a product that we use in the industry that will cut back on the "dirty" look over a period of time....so i hope this helps

If you really want to go for the clean elegant look, i would cut my nails all the way and then get a simple french manicure

just get a manicure every two weeks keep them nice and clean and simple. nothing worse than a female with long dirty nails. good luck!

Go to a nail salon and watch them. Go to CVS and just buy the materials to do what they did!

srub your nails with a nail brush and soap then go see a technician for nails. don't grross her out with dirty nails.
