Well, nice choices by everyone above, except some of them are from the 60's... The Doors? I am pretty sure Morrison never made it to 1970.....

Probably the 70's saving grace was Van Halen.

You see, there was the final 60's anti-war music and the next thing you know everyone is listening to the Carpenters... then came Disco...I thought I was going to die!

Then Van Halen came along and showed that a Guitar lead band can still make it and look at all of those 80's poser bands they inspired.... I would say Rush, but they are still around and actually the new CD comes out on Tuesday.

Alot of the bands mentioned by others are actually 60s bands that released some of their best music in the 70s (ie Rolling Stones, the Who, Zeppelin, Floyd). When I think of great 70s bands, I think of The Clash, Yes, ELP, Fleetwood Mac (they had some 60s stuff too, but Buckingham Nicks joined in 1974), The Allman Brothers, and many others. REM, U2 and The Cure actually started in the 70s, although their best work was in the 80s and 90s.
