I think your question is more clearly stated as:

Given |x - 2| < 7, solve for x and graph it on a number line.

-7 < x - 2 < 7
-5 < x < 9

To graph it on a number line fill in the line between
-5 and 9 but put circles that are not filled in on -5 and 9.

x < 9 AND x > -5

-5 < x < 9

x is between -5 and 9 on the number line (open circles, not filled in circles on the value -5 and 9)
