Women seem to get to decide what's sexy, aside from biological reasons (like facial features, or anything telling of 'good genes', essential to a continuation of a healthy species), but men seem geared towards getting with ANYTHING....

Please I'm looking more for a scientifically/evolutionarily based answer
Yeah I'm a girl. I'm not feminist, for the record.

thejazz - just clarifying...
when i say "deciding what's sexy" I AM talking about genes, because we base a lot of what is attractive (if HE inherited good genes), maybe determining "will he pass on good genes to my kid"... you know what I'm saying? certain features would be useful evolutionary-wise like muscles for example, back in the caveman days that's important for protection...that's all I'm saying

Women don't have power in natural selection. Natural selection is not related to sex or gender. Natural selection is the process of losing deleterious genes over time due to decreased or inferior procreativity. When you say "women...get to decide what's sexy," this statement seems flawed from the beginning.
What is sexy? To a peacock, flashly feather displays are used in courtship by the male. The female likes this, but it leaves the male vulnerable to predation.
We could choose a more anthropogenic view of this problem. None of the men I know will sleep with an unattractive female. They have determined what sexy is.
But realistically, females are not flashy for good reason in lower organisms. If you were a female Cardinal (the bird, not the catholic), you would be at a severe disadvantage if you were bright red like your male counterpart. As you sat upon your eggs, predators would easily spot you, eat you, eat your eggs, and finally, remove your genes from the gene pool (natural selection).
Sexy is an anthropomorphic word that doesn't really fit into the biological world.
~In response to ChrisW's response. Sperm have many mitochondria. They do not contribute them to the egg during fertilization. See reference.

Actually, it is the theory of sexual selection. It is more clearly demonstrated in animals such as birds like peacocks. In some respects, it is more powerful than natural selection, because a male will develop features which clearly put them at risk of getting eaten, such as large, cumbersome feathers. And the drive in males to mate is so strong that they will do it. Humans have done the same thing throughout history, with either the female choosing mates themselves, or having a mate chosen by her family, either way, desirable qualities will be sought.

Hhahahha!
Because most guys LET women decide things.
Once you decide you won't be intimitated, things change drastically!
Most guys are almost terrified of women.
How many guys do you know that will freeze when trying to approach what they consider a pretty woman?
So by default, the women get to choose usually.
It doesn't have to be that way & certainly isn't with me and a number of guys I know.
WE CHOOSE!
The key is knowing how to do it.
And understanding that it CAN be done!
First off, believe that YOU have value! As much value as any woman on the planet.
When you truly believe you have value, all of a sudden there is nothing a woman can say to hurt you.
(With-in reason.)
Once you learn how to approach life with women, women are easily approachable, so much so that they ask YOU out!
So to answer your question...
Guys let it happen.
Additional Info:
Hahhahha, When I initially answered, I did not really realize you were looking for a scientific explanation. I apologise for that.
However, I turn down and pick from dates every week to go out, so being from animal planet or not, It works! And it's cool! : ) Whether you believe it or not is immaterial, you don't have to believe in gravity to know it does work.
As for a scientific explanation, someone stated that historically the cost of childrearing has been much greater for the females, tending to make them much more selective. I agree.
Have fun! : )

Think of the difference in reproductive cost to the different sexes. Female = high. Male = low. That is why female choice is generally important in selection. But, it can work the other way, in some birds, for instance. Usually this is due to male parenting to a great degree.

because they have invested so much energy into the development of relatively few very large gametes, the oocytes (or eggs) while males (of most species) have developed a different strategy - the proliferation of their genetic material (DNA) by creating an extremely large number of gametes (sperm) that carry only genetic information, no nutrients to help develop the offspring.

The power of the woman to donate traits to her offspring is directly related to the side of the egg compared to the size of the sperm cell.
The woman donates the mitochondria, which has it's own RNA. The sperm cell is too small to hold any mitochondria.
