I believe that teachers should be able to assign homework, and the parents have a responsibility to ensure the kids do it. I believe that a teacher should be able to assign a grade to a student based on his or her own evaluation of that child's work, performance and attitude without fear that every parent will call for the teacher's job, because they don't want their child held accountable for that grade. I believe that teachers are underpaid, for the most part, and severely underappreciated by America. Teachers generally spend more time with our children than do their parents, and literally have had the responsibility of shaping our country's future thrust upon them. Yet they are charged with accomplishing that task in many cases without the proper tools with which to do so.
As a Little League Coach and Scout Leader, I saw "parents" whose kids' schedules were school, after school study session (maybe go home latchkey), baseball/softball/ soccer/swimming practice, then scouts. The kid would get home around 8 pm, eat something out of a bag, watch television for an hour or two and go to bed. Their total interaction spent with Mom or Dad was about a half an hour per day, at most.
Too many parents claim they both have to work 14 hours a day to make ends meet, but the ends include a pair of Mercedes, gardeners and housekeepers a couple times a week, every electronic gadget known to man, and every status symbol they can muster. They will amass enough money to send little Johnny and Susie to only the finest universities. But when little Johnny or Susie pull a GPA of 1.8 and combined SAT scores in the 800s, it's not their failing. It won't be their kids' fault for not studying - ever. Nope, the blame will be assigned to those "damned teachers."
Here in America teachers are a convenient scapegoat for all of Johnny and Susie's social, educational, and in some cases, psychological failures. But when the teachers ask for support, funding, or just plain help - they are told that they need to suck it up, or "do more with less."
Sorry for the rant, but this is a sore subject with me.

As a teacher I understand that parents work so alot of them aren't able to come in and volunteer and do things at school. However, I do feel that it should be manditory for parents to meet with teachers three or four times a year. Too many parents just don't care about the fact that their kids are doing terribly in school.

Yes I truely do. Unfortunately it gets worse every year. Where you have one or two in a class that are involved..you have 19 who aren't. You can really tell which children have parents who are active in school functions as well as in their children's schoolwork..because they are usually the ones who excel. Most parents work and can't come in to the school regularly..but they could be aware of what their kids are doing in school by reading their folders and all the papers that are sent home.

Parenting should require parents to be involved in their child's education.

Some schools do - in particular Charter Schools and Private Schools.
You have to remember that there are some parent(s) that are better of not involved.

Yes there should be a contract drawn up for parents to be involved when they enrol children for school. At private schools you sign an agreement to be involved somehow or rather.

Yes they should. Parents seem to be putting the blame on everyone else to raise their children... They need to be more involved period. Maybe there would be less violence if kids had mpre attention/disapline from their parents.

The kids, whose parents treat school that way, are way better off. I love my kids dearly and miss them every second they're not with me. Most kids who are in that situation, that's the time they're not with an degenerate parent who should've never had kids in the first place. And no, they shouldn't be involved if they choose not to be. and whoever gave me thumbs down is retarded and should kill themselves...trust me.
