his followers call themselves "Conservatives" since Bush's Government is even larger than the Democrat Bill Clinton's Govt.?

I think today's "Conservatives" are really "Theocrats". They are just too ignorant to realize it?

I don't know how President Bush and his followers can call themselves conservatives, nor do I care. I don't understand why you should care or choose to make it your business to find out -- but that of course is none of my business.

I used to call myself a conservative but eventually realized that I'm really more of a libertarian -- not in any partisan sense, because I believe that libertarianism is a way of thinking and cannot and should not be shoehorned into a procrustean bed and made to function as a political party.

I believe that government should keep out of our bedrooms AND out of our wallets. Liberals believe the first part of that formulation but not the second part; while conservatives believe the second part but not the first part. I consider the beliefs of both to be internally inconsistent. It astonishes me that both liberals and conservatives appear to be oblivious to the existence of any inconsistency in their own beliefs.

Conservatives used to say things like, "Scratch a liberal and you'll find an authoritarian." Some probably still do. But people who believe as I do would put it differently: Scratch either a liberal or a conservative and you'll find an authoritarian. They differ from each other only in their selection of the values they will seek to impose on the rest of us.

People who believe as I do have no quarrel with big government as such. Our quarrel is with coercive government that is unresponsive to the will of the people. We recognize that sometimes big government is the only government that can project economic strength and military force with sufficient power to keep our country free of foreign domination, which is after all the first and always the highest priority responsibility of government.

This is something that really gets my goat. I am as liberal as they come but I don't like big government. Somewhere in "liberal" there's "liberty". Liberty presupposes a limited government. People can make fun of Al Gore all they want, but his "reinventing government initiative" was a resounding success. It eliminated 100,000 federal bureaucrats. Clinton and Gore's successes are too numerous to list here. Clinton's book, My Life is 957 pages of positive successful policies. What are the great successes of the current administration? If conservatives are supposed to limit government, then why are their budgets and deficits so...BIG?

Because they are not Conservatives. They are Neo-Cons. Conservatives are people like Dr. Ron Paul, the Congressman from Texas. Ron has introduced legislation to get the US out of the UN. He challenged Congress to either declare war in Iraq, or stop the Administration from waging war. Ron is also an advocate of returning to the gold standard.

Pat Buchanan is a Conservative. Had he been elected president, we wouldn't be in Iraq now. There never would have been an attack on the World Trade Center, because we would not be involved in foreign wars.
