There are very few things about which I agreed with the Soviets. That being said, they weren't always wrong, either. One of the times when they were very right was in Lebanon in 1982.

Hezbollah had been kidnapping Western businessmen and diplomats, and many governments were wringing their hands and gnashing their teeth, wondering what to do.

Hezbollah then kidnapped a Soviet diplomat. KGB found and abducted the wives and children of various Hezbollah leaders and sent them back to those leaders in very small pieces along with the message "We trust you will cease bothering Soviet nationals". Guess what? They did.

As the old adage says, even a blind squirrel occasionally finds an acorn. This is an acorn which deserves to be adopted by the US in its fight against terrorists.

Being a female, mother of two, and sister to a Marine headed to Iraq, I cringe internally at the idea of such tactics.

But that doesn't mean I disagree with them.

At the end of World War II, the United States was forced to drop nuclear weapons on Japan to force them to admit defeat. Even with such a destructive weapon shown, there were many Japanese soldiers AND civilians that would rather commit ritual suicide than surrender to the United States.

I believe what we are facing in the Middle East is hundreds times worse than what we were facing in Japan during WWII.

These are not people that will stop due to diplomacy or a bloodied nose. You have to force them to stop, using whatever means neccessary.

Yes, there are many innocents (women and children, mostly), but sometimes you have to make sacrifices of the innocent to protect the majority (the majority in this case being all that are not extremist Muslim).

I hate the idea of killing innocents and do not ever want to be the one that has to pull the trigger. But I also know that Heavenly Father is a kind and just God who will take care of the innocents when they return to him.

If soviet tactics work so well why did they lose the war in Afghanistan, see their empire fall apart, and are still under constant terrorist attack by Chechen rebels. They also have a real talent for handling critics in the press, radioactive poisoning. Just imagine what a few well placed drops of Polonium-210 to do to solve the problem of liberal bias in the media . It is naive to believe you can give government permission to behave in an uncivilized way, and still live in a civilized society. People who believe that the Russian way of running this is superior should talk to one of the many Russians who came here to get away from it.

The Soviets were smart in that they went straight for the LEADERS and their families and left everyone else out of it.

The Leaders of this Islamic b.s. DO NOT WANT TO DIE, just effectively convince the poor downtrodden masses that death is a good thing. Not suprising they fall for it, given their circumstances here in the material world.

See the wisdom behind what the Soviets did? If that happened now under Bush's watch, we'd have scorched earth and wide spread death of innocents, yet the leadership would still be around, influencing the next generation

1. Best friend refuses to talk you. 2. Knowing someone or something is suffering from pain and you can't do a thing about it. 3. Getting hurt so bad physically in some sort of accident, like almost to the point of death.

Rick,
The soviets did a lot of things that we consider uncivilized. You might say that 'it worked' and you'd be right. As for me, though, I'd rather not live in a world where people fear me instead of respect me. If we earn the respect of the world, we will live a far better existence, than if we bully our way to the top. There are times, however, when even the most civilized people must use the sword instead of the pen. We arrived at that point about five and a half years ago.

Yes, I agree. You are on the money. These enemies are not your average enemies. They have no discretion on who they kill and even think God will reward them to kill as many as they can. Only seriously evil, mentalcases could believe this as this enemy does. Therefore there is no debate on how they should be handled. We need to deal with them as if Satan himself was gunning for us. That means Fierce and till the death. God Bless America.

If you follow this logic, America will be no better than the terrorists they are fighting against. If you stoop lower than the level of the terrorists, the terrorists will become matyrs or heroes, and will create more terrorists. The soviets are known to use thuggish methods, and if America follows these methods, America will become a thuggish nation also.

Treating violence with more violence doesn't reduce violence - it will only escalate it.

I agree. In times of war, some unpleasant tactics must be used, especially when dealing with very unpleasant and immoral enemies!
