You see, I was watching that show Forever Knight and one vampire in it has been around since before Mount Vesuveus blew up and, unless my timeline is off, Christianity wasn't a popular religion then. So if that's the case, what made a vampire tremble in fear of the ultimate light that is God? For that matter, which God? Why suddenly did Christianity and the cross have such an impact on them? Just a dumb thing, but I was wondering. So if anyone can (no pun intended) shed any light on the subject, please let me know. Thanks!!

Please keep in mind that I know vampires are folklore, but they are a popular part of our cultural folklore which is the only reason for this question.

Crosses have no effect on them, That is Hollywood. According to what I have seen and heard over the years, they mainly have a problem with daylight, garlic and silver.

When I was a kid, I watched "Dark Shadows" religiously, every single day. The undisputed star of the show was "Barnabas", the vampire. I remember distinctly that no matter WHAT - Barnabas HAD to be back in his coffin before it got light - which frequently complicated matters as he kept his "condition" a secret! His character was an extremely popular anti-hero of the late '60s, and we, his devoted fans, empathized with his dilemma. Poor Barnabas! He lived in perpetual fear of the sunrise.
Oh yeah - I almost forgot. MIRRORS! Vampires have no reflection!!! I don't think they could be harmed by them, but they WERE a "dead giveaway" that the vampire was something other than human. If I'm not mistaken, driving a wooden stake through their heart was the only fool-proof way to kill a vampire for good. Interesting subject!

Firssst of all, vampires do exist, and we do not fear Christianity, for we are of all religions. Ssecondly, we will not burn out and turn to dust in the sunlight, that is hollywood being hollywood. Although we won't turn into dust, the sunlight does have an effect on us. It can hurt our eyes very badly, and sometimes give us horrible rashes, but nothing to severe. Yesss, a stake through the heart could kill us, but then again, wouldn't a stake through your heart kill you also? We are not frightened by garlic, it just isn't the most pleasant smell in the world. Oh, and we do have reflectionsss. If you were to take a picture of me, I would be there in the end.

I'm Catholic and my wife's a Jew and we always kid about this. She said what they feared the most was the Mohel ( a Rabbi who performs circumcisions). The story was written, by Bram Stoker in 1897, to show good versus evil and the writer was Cathloic so I assume thats why it's used. I dont think it was done because there really are Vampires and only the Church can stop them, ask any Mohel. And any Vampire whos says they were around before Mount Vesuveus is lying about their age. And which God you ask, Zeus of course.

Just a bit of info for you..
The Garlic around the neck was NOT to ward off vampires.. it was used to cover the stench of the rotting corpses they dug up..
You have to remember these times were before medical science came up with the white gel they put under their noses when dealing with bodies..and also it was before Imbalming and corpses were rotten and stank badly..
So the strong odor of the garlic helped cover the smell of death..
Fact..
Also the fear of christianity is hollywood as well.. and the cross is total bs..just as it is said a vamp won't show in a mirror..
People were dug up believed to be vamps, people were killed with stakes believed to be vamps.. just as people were hung and burned for being healers ( witches ) Thousands of people who were not even witches were killed.. just as many were killed believed to be vampires..

Crucifixes don't bother *real* vampires in the least. Using a crucifix for protection against vampires is a myth.

Fairies and vampires are very similar when you are trying to shield yourself against them or make them go away. You'll find that in early legend, fairies are harmed by daisies. I suppose this may be true as well for vampires but you'd have to risk it...

Weapon made of silver, holy light, I don't believe vampires exist. Maybe the cross has the power of Jesus Christ.
