Absolutely. In the 70's,in my neighborhood, we didn't lock our doors, we left the keys in our cars, our kids went out to play in the neighborhood and didn't come in until lunch and suppertime. They always came home, happy, healthy and hungry.. Today, I wouldn't dream of doing this. If my grandchildren are visiting, and go outside, I am right there with them. My doors are locked, on my house and car. Maybe there was a lot going on elsewhere that we didn't know about, but in that small Southern town, there was no crime to speak of, no children kidnapped or harmed, and it was a rare occasion that anyone went into any ones home uninvited. Perhaps people believed in the laws then. Maybe they knew if they committed a crime, they really would go to prison, and it wouldn't be a picnic. Today, even a murderer can live 20 years after he is convicted and sentenced, and rapist can go free, or do a few months, then get out to rape again. There's too much leniency in our courts. Prison terms are cut in half, then half of that becomes probation, of a 20 year sentence, they end up getting 5, serve 18 months, then get out on probation due to overcrowding. Maybe that has something to do with our feeling less safe.

I cant say if we are less safe or safer than we once were. But i do think that we have been awakened to alot of the dangers in the world. Dangers that back during the 70s and 80s we probably for the most part ignored.

No i dont. All the so called dangers we seem to have today have been around for years. In todays world theres just so many ways for the media to let you know whats going on in the world. ie look at yahoo news it updates like every 30 mins. as soon as somthing happens bad or good its up and running on like 100s of web sights and other media outlets in matter of mins. If 9/11 happened in the 1940s do you think people would have heard about it within mins, no of couse not. and also there has been study that crime is going down(but violent crime has increased) but media coverge of crime increases every year. Also before 9/11 most terrorist activity was done by disgruntled americans. dont get me wrong its good to know whats going on in the world but just dont think the world is worst just because everytime you read the news or watch it, something else is bad has happened.

Most definately. But I wish I could back further, yet; like to the 50's or 60's. The kids are wilder now, there is no close family relationships, no respect for law and order. When I was a child, I would be scared if I didn't finish my homework; now, kids don't care; there is no fear of anything anymore.

Much safer back then, one thing there were less people and two, the www did not exist which I think with instant news and opinions doesn't give people time to cool off before they act...just a thought??

I don't know about everyone else, but I believe it was a lot safer back then, than it is now. Nowadays you can't even walk down the street without thinking about danger.

I feel safer from domestic criminals as violent crime has taken a nosedive coincident with states making it easier to carry concealed weapons. I feel less safe from international terrorists because they have been permitted to train in so many places and have become so well funded.

We'd all have to be as brain dead as our liberal senators if we didn't feel less safe now . How many planes did we loose to terrorism in the 70's / How many people ? How many skyscrapers fell ; and what about the Pentagon ?
