I don't consider it the same thing-- but I wanted to hear from all you.

To me, fortunate seems more faith driven while luck seems more "universe" driven.

fortunate seems to be more of a 'persistent' quality ... something which characterizes the entire course of a life

while "lucky" bears the impression of being a more spordic, intermittent thing .. which often carries with it a 'two-edged' nature, as in:

"lucky at cards, unlucky at love"

jeeeze, ANYthing to avoid *that* curse

hmmmmm, thinking back, I *am* pretty lucky at cards.

lolol

which unearths the realization that maybe people don't really have the power to determine their own fate .. even if that old graduation-ceremony speech favorite

"I am the captain of my fate,
and the master of my soul"

makes people nod their heads in agreement.

if you look little deeper, could there be a lacking of a certain humility ? a big streak of arrogance in that thought-stream?

jeeze, it's late at night on a Friday/Saturday

Kind of same in term of meaning but for me, i prefer fortunate as fortunate derived from fortune and it is almost destined to be associate with good things/ wealth etc. Lucky on the other hand, might not 100% relate to good things, for example "I am lucky not to tie up in this mess!" etc....
Well you can use fortunate to replace lucky in that context just to show more magnitudes of your expressions. but for 50-50 case, guess I would use lucky instead of fortunate
