A very well cared for goldfish will easily live over 20 years. 40+ isn't a huge stretch.

Maximum I've had a goldfish live for is 8 years. I won it at a fair. It started out in a bowl, but I bought it a tank and a filter. Like the person above me said, a goldfish can live for 20 years. It has a lot to do with how well you take care of it. A bowl is not enough space. If you clean a bowl regulary (once a week, 10-20% water changes), the goldfish will probably live at least a year. If you put it in a small tank (10 gallons) with a filter, it will probably live at least 2-4 years. If you put it in a medium tank (20-30 gallons), it'll probably live 8-10. If you put it in a large tank or pond (safe from predators) you will probably get a very long life span. Goldfish are rather messy fish (they eat a lot and poop a lot) so they need a lot of space to be kept healthy. They may also get sick (fungus infections, etc.) and will need medication (from the pet store) to stay alive. My 8 year old fish probably got sick about once a year, but then I wasn't that good about cleaning the tank. It died when I was away at college. :(

goldfish can live for a good while ,,,if u have trouble keeping ur fish alive usually, maybe u need to check some things like :

1. never put a heater in a goldfish tank (goldfish like their water cold 60 degrees or below

2.only feed them once a day and only the amount they can eat within 10 minutes their stomachs r only the size of there eye.

3. never use city water it will kill ur fish and if u have to use city water go to a pet store and they will give u something to put in ur water.

4.never change all of ur tank water just add to it(changing all the water will strip there slime coat and that can kill them.

5. Never have ur tank by a window the heat from the sun builds allergy in the tank which takes all the oxygen out of the water..

6. never wash ur tank with soap if u must wash ur tank use regular table salt.

7.if u have a small tank like 5 to 15 gallon put a lil salt in it..like a baby hand full and if u have a big tank put a adult size hand full of salt ..it helps with the slime coat.

Hope this helps :)

Because of their carp relations they can live from 20-40 years. But they will become very large with time.
