I bought a decoration from a garage sale. How can I tell if it is porcelin or ceramic?

If it has a bit of un-glazed surface that will not show,(bottom,) scratch it.
Scratch a piece of porcelain too to feel if it is the same.
Or try to scratch it with a potsherd of which you know what it is, the hardest will scratch the other, so if your decoration does not get a scratch it is likely to be porcelain.
If there is no 'un-glazed' surface it is more likely to be earthenware but it can be glass too.
