The rebellion in Upper and Lower Canada in 1837 remains controversial today. Did it contribute to the winning of responsible government, or did they slow down this process?

First paragraph: They hanged the Mayor of Toronto for treason. Next four paragraphs: That pretty much slows down anything. Fourth paragraph: They hanged the Indian What's-His-Name for rebellion in Saskatchewan later than that. So every thing is really slowed down. Causes and aftermath of rebellion: Every one is pretty much teed off. Finally there is Confederation of 1867. Ah-h! It is so good to bang your head against a wall, because it feels so good when you stop! In the U.S., there was rebellion much earlier in 1776. Victory. Independence. A short, sharp Civil War 1860-64, then unending peace and prosperity.
