Irony is what you don't expect.
there are three types of irony:
-Dramatic Irony : When the character doesnt know whats happening but you do
-Verbal Irony: when someone says something but it means the complete opposite, not sarcastic
and
-Situational irony: what we expect to happen but turns out its what we didnt expect

Irony is when you say or do the exact opposite of what is intended.
None of that was truly ironic. Those are what we call dilemmas. Two opposing forces coming together into one succinct thought, expression, or experience.
When you get out of a slow moving line to get into a quicker line and that new line becomes the slow line, that is irony.
When you weed your garden and end up pulling out all the flowers and leaving the weeds, that is irony.
When we send a man into space to look for intelligent life and then he forgets to put his space suit on when he goes for a space walk, that is irony.
When we elect someone into office based on an platform centered around education and childrens' welfare and then he gets indicted for child pornography, that is irony.

irony has two parts to it:
1. what it seems like
2. what the reality is
so in the beginning the writer may take a long time describing a scenario that very much goes one way but at the end completely turns it around. The two parts of irony fits well to that sentence.
I hope this helps.

I don't think that's irony exactly. Irony is more like "The Gift of the Magi" where the woman cuts off her hair to buy the man a chain for his pocket watch and the man sells his pocket watch to buy the woman a nice set of combs for her hair.

Irony is sort of like an oxymoron( like run but make sure you walk) actually, what you described IS an oxymoron. Ironic is like you shoot somebody(please don't shoot somebody) and then their brother/sister/mother/half-cousin three times removed, comes and shoots you. That is irony. Another example is to become what you hate the most. I guess that could be described as BOTH an oxymoron and irony.

I don't know that those are the best examples.
How about
The bible thumping preacher being caught in a hotel with a gay prostitute.
A billionare driving a KiaSophia
The very short dorkie accountant with the super model

it's ironic because simply this person (assuming a woman) loves this man but this man has a lot of faults towards her..i think the theme is that no matter what this man does to anger her, she is still going to love him.. its almost like unconditional love except with a little violence when you read the text lol
