Most motherboards support a range of processors. What you'll need to do is get the specification for your motherboard to find out what processors will fit on it. Generally you can gain a slight performance increase by upgrading the processor but don't expect to go from say a Pentium I processor to a Pentium III. You also won't be able to switch from an Intel to an AMD processor. The best thing to do is find out your motherboard and go to the vendors website.

You can as long as your motherboard supports whatever type you're trying to switch to. If it doesn't, you might as well get a new computer or not get one at all.
