when I cant sleep and HAVE to cos I have work the next day, I try afew things,
first make sure me lying in bed is really comfortable, the room should be cool enough I can have the blanket on- may mean an open window, and dark enough I cannot see my hand when stretched out, -eg curtains closed. I also need to be wearing really loose and comfortable clothing.
If I still cannot sleep I just make myself lie there, but be very very still. I have often fallen asleep just after doing this, I try to lie flat on my back, arms and legs stretched out as much as I can and as comfortably as I can. I think that if I cannot sleep properly, I have to at least have my body rest, otherwise I'll ache too much the next day. I have yet to lie awake and like this without falling asleep.
Some ideas and things which can also work are:
washing your feet just before you get into bed to sleep,
ensuring no one you are sharing a room with snores or makes sudden movements- take the sofa option if they wont leave the room, at least you stand a better chance at sleep there
Having a warm- not hot not cold, glass of milk, any variety will do, and dont put sugar in it unless its less than a teaspoon (not heaped) per 350ml glass. Milk will help you sleep, the warm or lukewarm temperature will make you drowsy.
write all the worrys and things that are keeping you awake- no matter how small, and what you want done/if you need help with them, down on a piece of paper and resolve to deal with them tomorrow, not until you have gotten out of bed and had breakfast.
good luck!
oh -and dont forget, steer clear of caffine eg coffee, redbull, diet or nondiet coke, tea... and sugar and alchohol, you may think they help but they will only keep you awake at night!

make sure you are in a dark room, with a good smell---lavender on cotton balls inside your pillow case helps. Make sure your bed is made up well---no books, magazines, or clothes on the bed. Turn the tv and radio off. Make sure the temperature of your room is slightly cool, its hard to sleep when its hot and avoid drinking a lot of anything before you go to bed, especially caffeinated products. Even after you do this the first night you still may have difficulty sleeping but try this same routine every night for a week.

Ever since I started drinking Himalayan Goji juice about a year ago I sleep like a baby. I used to get up in the middle of the night and go to the BR but since drinking the juice I sleep through the whole night. Try it, it's awesome.

A sure way to fall asleep is taking a Ambien sleep pill. You could also read a boring book or do some workouts before bed. Maybe do some pushup and situp max outs.

I used to sleep like a baby. Then one day that ceased to happen. I went for years with sleep deprivation. I tried everything. Then I went to the "nut house" and was prescribed a drug called Trazodone. For years now I am back to sleeping like a baby again. Since I have walked a mile in your shoes I can really feel for you. I pray you will find the solution.

Take a soothing, warm, bubble bath with a glass of white wine. Maybe add some candles. It's ok for guys to have bubble baths! Then get into bed and turn everything off. Close your eyes and count your blessing and before you know it, you'll be in dreamland! Good luck and God Bless!

Drinking some chamomile tea, meditating, or reading before bed can help relax you. Avoid all caffeine and don't exercise to close to your bedtime.
If you are in bed and can't fall asleep, put some mellow music on or think of something that makes you happy. Slowing your breathing/taking long breaths should help too. Good night =)

You can drink wine. Can't you? If not, just close your eyes after you're comfortable- and think of nothing. Absolutely nothing- whenever a thought comes into your head, and you realize it- think blackness, nothing. I've done this alot and it works. It may take some thought 'stops'-but keep on thinking nothing. Good night.

Eat a banana, a little cup of slightly warmed milk, and then stare at a computer or iPod screen while playing solitaire-NO LIGHTS-and then when your eyes get droopy, doze off into a deep, sweet slumber.
