My poor goldfish can't seem to get to the bottom of his tank. Whenever he swims down he can only make it halfway before he floats right back to top. I mean he acts as if he is balloon being forced underwater, and he comes back to the surface so quickly that half of his body is forced out of the water every time.
The only explanation I have is that he does like to blow bubbles on the surface and make them pop in effort to get my attention everytime I walk by. Maybe he swallowed a bubble??

Your description of the problem is very good even if you didn't realize it. Your fish does have a balloon inside it. It's called the swim bladder. One of two things is going on. First he may be constipated and he is unable to properly regulate his swim bladder. To help him through this, first fast him (no food) for about a day. Then feed him some high fiber veggies to "get things moving" again. The current favorite item to suggest and use is 2-3 raw english peas without the hull. Other high fiber veggies work too, but goldfish really do like peas. If he is constipated, this will do the trick in about a day after he eats the peas.

The other option is that he could have a swim bladder infection. That would be a bacterial infection and you would need to treat that with antibiotics. The best choice for an internal infection is Furanace. After that I would suggest tetracycline or Maracyn 2. Just treat as the package suggests for 14 days, even if he seems better after less. Hope that helps and feel free to email me with any questions.

problem with his swim bladder. three causes:

1. constipation. don't feed your fish for a day, the next day get a frozen pea and soak it in hot water until room temp. remove the skin from the pea and break the insides into bite sized pieces. feed the pieces to your goldfish. the next day don't feed him either. if he doesn't start swimming noramlly in a few days it's most likely not constipation.

2. internal infection. go to the pet store and get medicated food. feed for as long as directions say.

3. if your fish doesn't get better after that he may have a ruptured swim bladder. sometimes this clears up on it's own, sometimes the fish will swim funny forever. there's nothign you can do, but I assure you he's not suffering. get him a few plants he can use to weigh himself down with.

*edit*
lol sorry mm I didn't see you posted until I had.

I dont think he swallowed a bubble. It may be a game to him for entertainment. Fish can get really bored. give him lettuce to eat

Your fish may unfortunately be dying. Or, your filter may just be too strong for your fish.
