The postmark deadline for federal taxes was April 17, 2007. If you sent your check in on that date, has yours been cashed?

The answer to your question is "probably" but not "definitely". Think of the government's tax check cashing like a mountain. Check cashing builds to the peak of the receipt. The peak this year (differs each year) was the 24th of April. Then the number of checks received/cashed decreases for a period of days. If you figure that most people sent their check at the very last possible minute, it took 7 days to reach the peak, so by the 30th, you can be pretty sure they've received it. They have no incentive not to cash it. Thus unless they can't identify you (i.e. if you made some kind of mistake with your SS#, or the check doesn't match your return in some fashion) you should expect that it's definitely cashed by the 30th.

I mailed the check on Monday to the Phily address. It was cashed by the end of the week. In the past they've electronically debited my account from the info on my check rather than have it cleared by mail. I suspect they did it this time too.

IRS doesn't give you a chance to stop payment. If it's in their hands, it's cashed. No doubt. That was 10 days ago!
