Diesel engines will outlast gas engines 2 to 1. Diesel engines operate at lower combustion temperatures due to the higher compression. Less fuel is required for the combustion process, again due to the higher compression. Disadvantages are the initial cost o the diesel engine is higher & parts are generally more expensive.
Twin diesel engines may consume 30 gal/hr & 25 knots, were as twin gas engines may be in the 35 - 40 gal/hr range. The cost of fuel does not differ much.

Any diesel engine is more efficient than gas. A gas engine is 12% efficient in producing motion from burning hydrocarbons a diesel engine is 25% efficient in the transition.
Diesel is running about the same as high test gas in on the road stations. Marine stations may vary. Diesel is more efficient and cheaper in the long run. A 45 foot Chris Craft would be fine with a diesel engine.

Diesel is more efficient, but big heavy and more vibrations.
Gasoline engine is smaller and have more power for size.
Problems with electrical system is almost eliminated with a diesel. Diesel however gives out more pollution. A diesel will last you longer if taking care of. Fuel economy is better on a diesel but is that an issue? Diesel fuel is safer for storage.
On a 45 foot boat, I go go for diesel. I am not in a hurry.

Diesel is the way to go, especially on a larger boat. yes they do cost more to purchase but you get it back at re-sale time. They are way more efficient so you save money over gas. Example, I owned a 28 Pursuit with twin 350 265 hp inboards. I averaged 14 gallons per hour for the season at a cruising speed of about 20 kts. I now have a 30 Pursuit with twin Cummins 250 hp inboards. I average 7 gallons per hour for the season at a cruise of 24 kts. Gas costs $3.80 a gallon right now by me and diesel is $3.25.
I doubt a 45 with gas engines (unless a speed boat) would get out of its own way. At one point I owned a 35 ft Egg Harbor with twin Crusader 454 engines. It burned 35 gph at a cruise of about 16 kts. It was a tub! A friend had another 35 Egg with twin Yanmar 370 hp that cruised at 24kts and burned 30gph, faster with less fuel.

Diesels are more fuel efficient, and they deliver more torque. However, diesel fuel costs more than premium gas, and it costs more to have the engines worked on. Even oil changes are more expensive.

A lot of good answers here. One more factor to consider is diesel is safer than gasoline on boats as you don't have to worry about explosive vapors.

Diesel engines can live 40+ years with proper maint., try getting THAT out of a Gasoline engine.

diesel is more fuel effiecient and lasts longer but it is alot more money plus gas motors sound better and are easier to work on let alone cheaper to fix
