Adding 5/4 and 7/9 is kind of like to add apples and oranges...

First you need to convert them to fractions with a common denominator... (the number below the line)... to do that you need a number that both 4 and 9 divide evenly into. The lowest is 4 x 9, or 36
so 5/4 = ?/36... well multiply 5 by 36 and divide by 4. The result is 45... so 5/4 = 45/36
Doing the same thing with 7/9...
7/9 = ?/36. Multiply 7 by 36 and divide by 9. The result is 28... so 7/9 = 28/36...
Now we have apples and apples....
45/36 + 28/36 = 73/36... sometimes written 2 1/36.

OK, this looks to me to be a fractions addition problem. If so, you must find the common denomiator, which in this case would be 36-ie 5/4=45/36 and 7/9=28/36. Now you would add the numerators together giving you 73/36 and then reduce the fraction to get the answer of 2&1/36. Hope this is what you're looking for.

Get the common denominator (bottom number) of 4 and 9, which would be 4x9= 36, so the denominator is 36, but you have to times the top number by the number you multiplied the denominator by (x9 for 5/4= 45/36 & x4 for 7/9=28/36).

Add 45+28= 73, denominator stays the same, so the answer is 73/36.

Hope that was clear enough! ^.^

You have to find a common denominator. In this case it is 36. so 5/4 = 45/36 and 7/9 = 28/36. Add 'em up and you get 73/36 which reduces to 2 1/18

multiply the first fraction by 9 / 9, since 9 / 9 equals 1 it doesnt change it. Multiply the second fraction by 4 / 4. Doing this makes the two denominators equal which will allow you to add them.

5 * 9 / 4 * 9 = 45 / 36
7 * 4 / 9 * 4 = 28 / 36

45 + 28 / 36 = 73 / 36

Since 73 is prime, the fraction can't be simplified.
