9 / 4x + 7 / -5x

Since the denominator needs to be the same in both fractions in order to add them, you will have to change them.

Multiplying by 5 / 5 is the same thing as multiplying by 1, right?
So,

9 * 5 / 4x * 5 = 45 / 20x

Multiplying by 4 / 4 is the same as multiplying by 1, so

7 / -5x = 7 * 4 / -5x * 4 = -28 / 20x

Now that they have the same denominator, add them.

45 - 28 / 20x = 17 / 20x

Yes, it's 17/(20x).

Note: I prefer to enclose a multi-term denominator in parentheses, to avoid any possible ambiguity. Here's how one gets this result:

9/(4x) - 7/(5x) = [9*5 - 7*4]/(4*5) = [45 - 28]/20 = 17/20.

we need the lcd.
the lcd = 20x

9/4x = 45/20x
7/-5x = -28/20x

45/20x - 28/20x =
17/20x
