First, you need to understand the following facts:

1) An egg is not ready to be fertilized immediately upon its release from the ovary. It must travel a short ways down the Fallopian tube before it is ready for fertilization.
2) Although hundreds of millions of sperm are released in a typical ejaculation, most of the sperm will die before ever reaching the uterus, maybe a few thousand will survive the trip through the uterus, and only a few hundred will ever reach the egg itself. (This is perhaps nature's way of ensuring that only the hardiest sperm survive to fertilize the egg; like "survival of the fittest.")

Now: you DO have to be ovulating during that particular cycle to get pregnant (no ovulation = no egg to be fertilized = no baby to be made.) BUT, you don't have to ovulate the same day you have sex in order to get pregnant.

There is only a small window of time where an egg is viable and able to be fertilized before it begins to die; I am not sure exactly what that timeframe is, but I have heard anywhere from 12-24 hrs or maybe a teeny bit longer (don't quote me though!)

However, sperm can survive 2-3 days, so let's say you have sex on Monday, but you don't actually ovulate until Tuesday (or even Wednesday.) You could still get pregnant.

The opposite is also true. For another example, let's say that you ovulated late Monday but didn't have sex until late Tuesday or maybe even early Wednesday. If the egg is still viable, you could get pregnant that way too.

Yes and no. LOL - you don't have to ovulate the same day as intercourse....

You can have sex before you ovulate and the sperm can survive in your body until you actually do ovulate. THEN you conceive.

Or you can ovulate and the egg waits in your uterus, then a day or two after ovulation if you have sex the egg might be fertilized and then you conceive.

you don't have to be ovulating at the time of unprotected sex to get pregnant. the sperm can live inside you for a few days so you can have unprotected sex a few days before ovulation and then get pregnant.

Most will say yes, but it all depends on your cycles- if you have irregular cycles you will not know when you are ovulating so there is always a chance and you can always ovulate different then the normal 2 weeks after you start you period.
